City of Charleston announces grace period for metered parking enforcement updates
April 16, 2018
The city of Charleston has announced a week-long grace period, beginning Monday, April 16, regarding the extension of parking meter enforcement to 10 p.m. Written warnings, rather than tickets, will be issued between the hours of 6 and 10 p.m. throughout the grace period.
Metered parking will remain free on Sundays throughout the city.
City spokesman Jack O’Toole said, “We want to provide citizens an opportunity to understand and adjust to these changes before we begin enforcing them.”
The changes to metered parking were timed to coincide with Sunday’s launch of the “Hospitality on Peninsula” (HOP) park-and-ride service, which was created collaboratively by the city and county of Charleston, Charleston Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, and Charleston Area Regional Transportation Authority. Beginning Sunday at 6 a.m., those who work downtown will be able to park in the designated lot at 999 Morrison Drive for just $5 per day and commute for free using the HOP shuttle, which will run every 15 minutes and make 8 stops along Meeting, Broad, and East Bay Streets.
