City of Charleston & Charleston Parks Conservancy come together to host 9th annual Light the Lake

October 31, 2024

The City of Charleston and the Charleston Parks Conservancy announced that the popular Light the Lake holiday event will continue this year, thanks to the dedicated support of Mayor William Cogswell, District 8 Councilman Mike Seekings, and city of Charleston and Conservancy staff. The 9th annual Light the Lake will take place on December 6th from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Colonial Lake (Broad Street, Charleston, SC 29401), ensuring that this beloved tradition remains a highlight of the holiday season.

After sharing the financial and logistical challenges of hosting the large-scale, free event with limited sponsorship support the Conservancy is pleased that the city is stepping in to provide crucial support and that the event will proceed with renewed enthusiasm.

“Light the Lake is a cherished tradition that brings our community together during the holidays,” said Mayor William Cogswell. “I’m grateful to Councilman Seekings and all those who contributed to make this event possible. It’s a wonderful example of how we can come together to preserve the experiences that make Charleston special.”

Councilman Mike Seekings added, “This event marks the beginning of our holiday traditions, and I’m excited to partner with the Charleston Parks Conservancy to ensure that Light the Lake continues to shine this year. It’s vital for our community to have this free event, allowing everyone to come together and celebrate the season.”

As it has over the past 8 years, the Charleston Parks Conservancy staff and volunteer corps will be operating the event.  Light the Lake 2024 will feature hundreds of luminaries surrounding the lake, food trucks and activation zones at the corners of the Lake. Mayor Cogswell will light the lake at 6pm.

“This outpouring of support speaks to the community’s deep-rooted commitment to our parks and shared traditions, demonstrating that when a need arises, Charleston rallies together,” said Darlene Heater, Charleston Parks Conservancy Executive Director and CEO.
