City of Charleston continues commitment to safe, modern playgrounds
August 11, 2025Four city playgrounds are set for major upgrades as part of the City of Charleston’s ongoing effort to provide safe, modern play spaces for local families. Three of the playgrounds—Mary Utsey Park, Stephen Washington Park, and Brittlebank Park—are already in the design phase, with work scheduled to replace equipment originally installed in the 1990s.
These projects build on more than a decade of steady investment in the city’s parks and playgrounds. Since launching its proactive Playground Replacement Program in 2012, the city has replaced 29 aging playground systems in 23 parks and added 18 brand-new playgrounds through the development of 13 new parks.
“Our goal is to ensure every child in Charleston has access to a safe and vibrant place to play,” said Jason Kronsberg, Facilities and Capital Projects Section Chief. “We’re proud of the progress made and remain committed to keeping our playgrounds in excellent condition for generations to come.”
The Playground Replacement Program was created following a comprehensive system-wide assessment that revealed many older playgrounds had exceeded their service life and posed safety and maintenance challenges. Replacements have been funded through a combination of city budget allocations, state and federal grants, and community fundraising efforts.Â
