City of Charleston designated Pinwheel City for National Child Abuse Prevention Month
April 19, 2018Earlier today, Mayor John Tecklenburg joined representatives from the South Carolina Children’s Trust, the Department of Social Services, and the Dee Norton Child Advocacy Center to announce the city’s designation as a 2018 Pinwheel City in observance of National Child Abuse Prevention Month. This is the fifth year the city has participated in the “Pinwheels for Prevention” initiative in support of local efforts to raise awareness for child abuse prevention throughout the state.
In observance of April being National Child Abuse Prevention Month, pinwheel gardens have been planted at Colonial Lake and several city of Charleston fire stations to represent the happy and hopeful childhoods that are threatened by instances of child abuse.
Mayor Tecklenburg said, “As members of this community, it’s critical that we each do our part to ensure that our children are safe, and that their families know who they can turn to in the event of a crisis. I am so thankful for agencies like the South Carolina Children’s Trust, Department of Social Services, and the Dee Norton Child Advocacy Center that work so diligently to identify children in need and provide the necessary services and interventions.”
