City of Charleston Hurricane Dorian September 11 Recovery Update

Since Hurricane Dorian left the area last Thursday evening, city crews have collected more than 150,000 cubic feet of debris from neighborhoods throughout the city of Charleston.

Crews will continue to collect until 7 p.m. tonight and will resume first thing in the morning.

Contractors have been hired to assist with debris pick up and currently have five trucks supplementing the city’s collection vehicles. The contractors plan to provide 10 additional trucks to assist with this process next week.

Plans for a special debris collection schedule are currently being finalized and will be released when complete. Under this schedule, crews will continue to collect debris, lawn waste and trash, excluding non-vegetative items such as household appliances, bedding and furniture.

To ensure an efficient collection process, citizens are asked to have all of their debris separated and ready for pick up no later than Sunday, September 22nd.

Homeowners are reminded that any debris and construction materials resulting from home repairs covered by insurance should be removed and disposed of by the private contractor and not put out for municipal pick up.

Open burning is not permitted in the city, and citizens are reminded that leaves must be bagged in paper lawn and refuse bags for collection, as loose leaves clog storm drains.

Due to the high volume of curbside garbage following the storm, crews continue working overtime to collect as quickly as possible. Today’s garbage collection is expected to be completed in all areas of the city this evening and continue on a normal schedule moving forward.

The initial, citywide damage assessment sweep is now complete. Since beginning the process five days ago, teams have visited and assessed nearly 30,000 properties throughout the city and calculated a 1 percent damage rate. In the coming weeks, these teams will continue to work directly with citizens whose properties sustained significant damage as a result of the storm.

Citizens are encouraged to keep sandbags provided by the city through the remainder of hurricane season, which concludes on November 30.

The normal street sweeping schedule will remain on hold for two weeks, while street sweeping crews continue to focus on storm cleanup.

Stormwater crews continue working to clear storm drains and ditches of debris.

All Recreation facilities and programs are open and running as normal, except for the Municipal Golf Course. The driving range, putting greens, clubhouse and back nine are open. The front nine remains closed until further notice.

The Parks Department continues to work to clean up the city’s more than 120 city parks. Hundreds of city trees are being assessed for damage and prioritized for work.
