City of Charleston outlines next opportunities for public feedback on Medical District Overlay Zone

September 3, 2025

Following a unanimous vote by the Charleston Planning Commission last week, the city outlined the next steps in the public process for the proposed Medical District Overlay Zone. The proposal, which would pave the way for a state-of-the-art cancer center and broader medical campus growth for the Medical University of South Carolina, continues to move through multiple rounds of public review and approval.

Next steps:

  • Sept. 10 – The city will host a workshop at 108 Meeting St. at 5:30 p.m. (RSVP here).
  • Sept. 17 – The Planning Commission will receive an update on the proposal to review language changes and modifications.
  • Sept. 23 – A public hearing and first reading will be held at the Charleston City Council meeting.
  • Subsequent readings – The ordinance will require a second and final reading at future City Council meetings before adoption.

In addition to these events, MUSC and the city will host weekly meetings with neighborhood organizations, advocacy groups, and other stakeholders to ensure residents and community partners remain engaged throughout the process.

Community members are encouraged to participate and share feedback. The process will be guided by a commitment to providing opportunities for residents to review, comment and stay engaged.
