City of Clinton Announces Change to Metal Collection in Man-Made Debris Piles

March 4, 2026

The City of Clinton Streets and Sanitation Department has announced a change to its weekly debris collection policy that will affect how residents dispose of metal items in man-made debris piles.

Effective Monday, March 30, the department will no longer be able to collect metal from man-made debris piles using the City’s weekly clam truck service. The change comes after the Laurens County landfill notified the City that it can no longer accept metal mixed with other materials unless the metal is separated.

According to the City, separating metal from other debris during collection is not feasible for sanitation crews due to the additional time and resources required.

Under the new policy, if sanitation crews identify metal items within a man-made debris pile, they will leave a door hanger at the residence explaining the updated requirements. Residents will be asked to remove the metal from the pile before the following week’s collection.

If the metal items remain in the pile the following week, the situation will be referred to the City’s Code Enforcement Officer for further action.

To help residents adjust, the City is providing a one-month grace period as the new policy takes effect. During this time, residents are encouraged to review their debris piles and remove any metal items so they can be disposed of properly.

City officials noted that the City of Clinton currently does not have the capacity to offer a separate metal collection service.

Residents with questions about the policy change may contact the Public Works office at 864-833-7520 and ask to speak with the Streets and Sanitation Manager.

The City expressed appreciation to residents for their understanding and cooperation as the department works to comply with landfill requirements while continuing to provide efficient service to the community.
