City of Clinton Celebrates Storm Drain Art Contest Winners and Promotes Environmental Awareness

December 13, 2023

In a recent Clinton City Council Meeting, the City of Clinton, in collaboration with Keep Laurens County Beautiful, recognized the winners and finalists of the Storm Drain Mural Art Contest. The initiative was part of the broader 2023 Keep it Clean “Drains to Stream” Initiative, aiming to foster community engagement in environmental preservation.

Courtney Stonell, representing Keep Laurens County Beautiful, expressed enthusiasm about the creative and educational potential of the contest. “These projects will serve not only as artistic installations but also as educational tools to grow awareness to keep our storm drains clear of trash and pollution that ends up in our local streams,” Stonell emphasized.

The Storm Drain Art Contest invited local artists to use their talent to communicate a crucial message about protecting water resources. The 1st place winner, Leia Upton, stood out with a captivating design that caught the attention of the judges. Upton’s artwork will soon adorn West Main Street, specifically at the corner of Scoops on West Main.

The mural is expected to serve as a visual reminder of the importance of keeping storm drains free from litter and contaminants. This strategic location was chosen to maximize visibility and impact, ensuring that the message resonates with both residents and visitors.

Mayor Randy Randall, a staunch advocate for community involvement in environmental initiatives, joined Stonell in applauding the winners during the ceremony. Reflecting on the significance of the Storm Drain Art Contest, Mayor Randall commented, “These art installations not only enhance the aesthetic appeal of our city but also play a vital role in educating the community about the direct connection between storm drains and the health of our local streams. It’s heartening to see such creative solutions emerging from our residents.”

The “Drains to Streams” initiative demonstrates that the combination of art and education in public spaces is a powerful tool for raising awareness and inspiring positive change.
