City of Clinton Utility Customers Asked to Use Exact Change Due to Penny Shortage

January 10, 2026

The City of Clinton has issued a notice to utility customers regarding a growing shortage of pennies, which are no longer being produced and are becoming increasingly difficult to obtain.

As a result, customers who pay their utility bills with cash are asked to use exact change whenever possible. City officials say every effort will be made to provide the correct change; however, due to the limited availability of pennies, there may be instances when exact change cannot be returned.

In those cases, any remaining cents will be credited to the customer’s utility account and automatically applied to the next bill. These credits will appear clearly on the utility statement and reduce the balance due.

Customers with questions or concerns are encouraged to contact Jennifer Metz with City of Clinton Utility Billing at 864-833-2790 for additional information.
