City of Columbia holds Swearing-In Ceremony for Mayor and City Council Members
January 6, 2026The City of Columbia held its Swearing-In Ceremony for the Mayor and City Council Members on Monday, January 5, 2026, at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center.
Mayor Daniel Rickenmann, City Council Members, City Manager Teresa Wilson, and City staff gathered with community members to mark the beginning of a new term of service for city leadership. The ceremony formally swore in Mayor Daniel Rickenmann, Councilwoman Tina N. Herbert, District I, Councilman Peter M. Brown, District IV, and Councilman Sam P. Johnson, At-Large.
The City was honored to welcome members of the clergy, state and municipal court judges, state and federal legislators, Richland County elected officials, presidents and representatives of educational institutions, agency heads, community leaders, neighborhood presidents, former members of City Council, and other distinguished guests.
Mayor Daniel Rickenmann reflected on the progress made over the last four years and the vision ahead.
“Four years ago, Columbia saw opportunity, and together, we seized it. By investing in our people, modernizing how City Hall works, and leaning into strong partnerships, we’ve built real momentum being felt in every neighborhood. As the capital city, we’re no longer waiting to be noticed; we’re showing up, moving forward, and building a future that works for everyone living, working, and visiting Columbia. Thank you for the trust to continue serving our great city another four years; the best is yet to come.”
Councilwoman Tina N. Herbert emphasized the importance of intentional growth and community centered development.
“Columbia is growing, and that growth must be intentional, rooted in strong neighborhoods, opportunity for small businesses, and a commitment to the people who have always called this city home. I believe in development that lifts residents up, revitalizes our corridors, and invests in our youth, not growth that leaves communities behind. My vision is a Columbia that builds together, where progress is measured not just by cranes in the sky, but by stability, equity, and opportunity in every neighborhood.”
Councilman Peter M. Brown spoke to Columbia’s continued transformation and potential.
“Columbia has always been a great place to live and raise a family. But we can do better and we are doing better. Together, we can make Columbia not only the best city in South Carolina, but a destination for people from all over the United States of America. A place that all people will call home and be proud of everything that Columbia has to offer. Columbia’s time has come and we are ready to embrace our future and to realize just how fortunate we are to live in this great community. I am proud to serve the citizens of Columbia for the next four years as we continue to grow, invest, and transform Columbia into a model city for the future, with a purposeful and strategic vision for the future. Buckle up Columbia, and enjoy the ride.”
Councilman Sam P. Johnson shared his commitment to turning community vision into action.
“Columbia’s future is built on the voices and dreams of its people. My commitment is to turn those aspirations into action, creating a city where opportunity, innovation, and community thrive together.”
The ceremony concluded with a reception honoring the newly sworn in officials.
