City of Columbia issues statement regarding the “Busted Plug”

March 31, 2025

The City of Columbia is strategically exploring the best possible permanent location for the iconic “Busted Plug” sculpture. Our vision is to integrate this beloved artwork into the most appropriate public space to be determined as part of an evaluation process, ensuring it remains a valued part of our city’s landscape.

The removal of “Busted Plug” from its previous downtown location in 2023 was not a decision made by the City. The artwork was situated on private property, and the property owner required its removal. In response, the City took great care to ensure the sculpture, which stands 40 feet tall and weighs approximately 675,000 pounds, was safely and properly relocated.

We recognize that some residents may have concerns about the sculpture’s current storage. However, “Busted Plug” was originally designed for outdoor display, and we do not anticipate any issues related to its temporary outdoor storage. The City remains committed to preserving the integrity of this significant piece of public art.

As part of our strategic planning process, we are engaging stakeholders, evaluating potential sites, and considering factors such as accessibility, visibility, public engagement, and long-term sustainability. Our goal is to identify a location that not only showcases the sculpture effectively but also enhances the cultural and aesthetic value of our public spaces.

We appreciate the community’s continued interest in “Busted Plug” and look forward to providing updates as we move forward in this process.
