City of Columbia launches “Community University” to give residents an inside look at local government

March 5, 2026

Residents interested in learning more about how local government works will soon have the opportunity through a new educational initiative hosted by the City of Columbia Community Development Department.

The department is launching “Community University,” a five-week course designed to help residents better understand the role of city government and how various departments serve the community in Columbia, South Carolina.

The free program will offer participants a behind-the-scenes look at the operations and services that shape daily life in the city. Through hands-on learning and presentations from city staff, attendees will gain insight into areas such as parks and recreation, public safety, and other municipal services.

Organizers say the goal of Community University is to build stronger connections between residents and city government while increasing awareness of how city departments work together to serve the community.

Sessions will take place on Wednesday evenings from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Virginia Bedford Center at Earlewood Park. Register here.
