City of Columbia Preservation staff receive Preservation Service Award from the State of South Carolina

Each year thousands of South Carolinians work to preserve the state’s legacy that is reflected in our historic buildings, structures, and sites. Since 1995, Preservation South Carolina, the SC Department of Archives and History, and the Office of the Governor have recognized exceptional accomplishments in the preservation, rehabilitation and interpretation of our architectural and cultural heritage with a series of statewide awards.
The Preservation Service Award recognizes projects and activities that make exemplary contributions to the advancement of historic preservation. This year, City of Columbia Preservation staff have been recognized with the Service Award due to their energetic and creative efforts at outreach and advocacy for the community’s historic buildings. With the understanding that there is no preservation without sustained outreach to educate and support property owners and the larger community, the preservation planners’ efforts are constantly evolving. Their output is professional and the energy that is poured into these endeavors shows a love and understanding of historic buildings and their crucial role in making what could be just another place into ‘home’ and a vibrant community for all.

Within the last three years, staff has created a series of videos about each historic district, including their histories and architectural styles, and with images from each area to engage viewers. Other videos include Preservation Month bike rides (for self-guided or virtual riders), how-to videos for the local tax abatement, the Bailey Bill, architectural survey results, and more.
