GREENVILLE, SC – April 29, 2010 –  The City of Greenville willcelebrate National Bike Month with free family-friendly activitiesdesigned to appeal to bicycle enthusiasts of all ages, skill levels andinterests. Volunteers from Bikeville, the City’s bicycle-friendlycommunity initiative, have developed a series of events which will takeplace throughout the month of May to promote greater public awareness of bicycle operation, safety and enjoyment.

The League of American Bicyclists honored Greenville with itsprestigious Bicycle Friendly Community award (Bronze Level) in October2009 and the City began a comprehensive Bicycle Master Plan study inJanuary of this year. The goal is to provide infrastructure, educationand outreach to increase the number of trips made by bicycles. This will be achieved by improving roads to accommodate bicyclists and creatingprograms that encourage alternative transportation. Over the past fiveyears, the City has installed eight miles of bicycle lanes and there are currently 10 miles of paved bicycle trails throughout the city. TheCity plans to install an additional five miles of bicycle lanes withinthe next year.
