Claflin hosts reception for distinguished S.C. physician

ORANGEBURG, SC – Dr. Mike Watson, a retired Bamberg County physician and former member of the Claflin University Board of Trustees, will join Dr. Henry N. Tisdale (Clafin’s president) and other dignitaries at a reception in Watson’s honor, Sunday, Sept. 14, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at the Ministers’ Hall on the university’s campus.

The reception will celebrate Watson’s two just-published books – “The Cloud Chaser – A Physician’s Early Adventures” and “Catching the Clouds – A Physician’s Purpose Filled Life.” Book one, “The Cloud Chaser,” follows Watson from his early childhood during the Great Depression, through his experiences as a World War II U.S. Marine, and subsequent medical schooling. “Catching the Clouds” tells the story of Watson’s life and career as both a physician and missionary in Bamberg County and beyond through the founding of United Methodist Volunteers in Missions.

“Dr. Watson is a man who backs his beliefs with action,” says S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley. “Read how my childhood doctor embraces differences, serves those most in need, and leaves a powerful and lasting impact on the world.” (Watson was also recognized as a “visionary leader” in Haley’s book, “Can’t is Not an Option.”)

Having established an endowed scholarship at Claflin, Watson also will present a “special gift” in support of Claflin’s $96.4-million capital campaign.
