Clemson Awards Honorary Doctorate of Humanities to Lexington Medical Center President & CEO Mike Biediger at Graduation

WEST COLUMBIA, SC – Congratulations to Lexington Medical Center President & CEO Mike Biediger! Clemson University awarded Mr. Biediger an honorary Doctorate of Humanities at spring commencement exercises on Friday morning, May 8, 2015. According to Clemson, the honor is in recognition of Mr. Biediger’s dedication to enhancing the quality of health care in South Carolina and our community while improving the delivery of care to citizens.
Mr. Biediger graduated from Clemson in 1976 with a Bachelor of Science in industrial management, and earned his Master of Business Administration from the University of South Carolina in 1980. He quickly became a leader in health care management in South Carolina. Mr. Biediger was the executive vice president and chief operating officer of Lexington Medical Center from 1989 to 1996, when he became president and CEO.
During Mr. Biediger’s tenure, Lexington Medical Center grew from a 292-bed hospital to a medical network with 414 beds, six community medical centers, an occupational health facility, the largest nursing home in the Carolinas, an Alzheimer’s care center and a physician network that employs approximately 300 physicians in 60 physician practices.
Mr. Biediger has also been a strong advocate for implementing important new technology and services that have raised the level of care for our community’s citizens. He has been credited with expanding the cardiac care capacity for the Midlands by championing the addition of a comprehensive cardiovascular care program at Lexington Medical Center.
Mr. Biediger is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives, which also named him South Carolina Healthcare Executive of the Year in 1990. He is one of 10 children, eight of whom graduated from Clemson. He and his wife Jean have two children and one grandchild.
