Located on campusat the corner of Fort Hill Street and Williamson Road, the Scroll ofHonor is the realization of a long-held desire to create a perpetualmemorial near the football stadium. In 1942 Memorial Stadium was namedto honor Clemson alumni who died in the line of duty, but until nowthere has been no mention at the stadium of those killed.

“Clemsonhas a proud tradition of military excellence, dating back to itsfounding as a military school,” said Clemson President James F. Barker.“It is an honor to dedicate a memorial that will stand to remind us ofthe efforts and ultimate sacrifice of so many Clemson veterans.

RetiredMarine Corps Col. Larkin Spivey, a decorated Vietnam War veteran, willspeak during the ceremony. Spivey commanded infantry and reconnaissanceunits in combat and was trained in parachute, submarine and specialoperations. Spivey is the nephew of two alumni recognized on the Scrollof Honor – twin brothers Edward R. Norton and James A. Norton Jr.,members of the Class of 1942 who were killed during World War II.

Thededication ceremony will honor a veteran from each major conflict andfeature comments from individuals representing the organizations thatsupported the memorial. Major donors and volunteers include the Classesof 1954, 1958 and 1959, IPTAY, the Clemson Alumni Association, theClemson student body and the Clemson Corps.

“It truly is movingto see how many volunteers supported the project and worked tirelesslyto make the memorial a reality,” said retired Air Force Brig. Gen. HapCarr, past chairman of the Clemson Corps and co-chairman of the Scrollof Honor Memorial project committee.

“We are thankful for thehundreds of alumni, friends and family members who have helped us makethis memorial a reality,” said retired Col. Danny Rhodes, past chairmanof the Clemson Corps and co-chairman of the Scroll of Honor Memorialproject committee.

The Clemson Corps started maintaining a scrollof names in 2002 to recognize alumni killed in the line of duty.
