Clemson welcomes turfgrass agronomist focused on research, sustainability, and industry partnerships
March 17, 2026Idalia “Alejandra” Sierra is the new assistant professor of turfgrass agronomy at the Clemson University Pee Dee Research and Education Center (REC), near Florence, South Carolina.
She brings expertise in turfgrass science, sustainable management and stakeholder engagement to Clemson’s land-grant research and Extension programs in South Carolina.
Sierra joins Clemson from the University of Florida, where she earned a doctorate in horticultural sciences. Her research focuses on nutrient management, water conservation, herbicide evaluations and the performance of warm-season grasses.
A natural fit for Clemson’s land-grant mission
At Clemson, Sierra’s position combines research with Cooperative Extension outreach, a role she said aligns with her professional goals. Clemson’s commitment to translating research into practical solutions drew her to the University.
“Clemson’s land-grant mission really resonates with me,” she said. “This is a place where research isn’t limited to publications. It’s meant to make a difference for the people managing turfgrass every day.”
The Pee Dee REC’s facilities will allow her to design experiments that address real-world challenges faced by turf managers.
“The infrastructure at the Pee Dee Center is outstanding,” she said. “It gives me the chance to conduct research that is scientifically sound and highly applicable for golf courses and other athletic fields, as well as sod producers and homeowners across the state.”
Sierra’s position is part of the Clemson Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences.
“Dr. Sierra brings an exceptional blend of scientific expertise and practical experience to our turfgrass program,” said Jim Faust, Clemson plant and environmental sciences acting department head. “Her commitment to stakeholder‑driven research and her passion for sustainable turf management align perfectly with Clemson’s land‑grant mission. We welcome her to the Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences and look forward to the positive impact her work will have across South Carolina’s turfgrass industry.”
Early research focus: weed management
One of Sierra’s first research priorities will be addressing weed challenges on South Carolina athletic fields, including golf courses. She plans to evaluate both chemical and nonchemical strategies with an emphasis on long-term, sustainable solutions.
“My goal is not only to test an herbicide,” she said. “I want us to understand why the weed is there in the first place. When we understand the causes, we can help managers solve problems instead of just treating symptoms.”
In addition to golf courses and other athletic fields, Sierra noted the state’s sod farms and home lawns also present vital opportunities for improved turf management. She aims to develop a program that supports all stakeholders, ensuring that science-based solutions are accessible at every level of the industry.
Listening first
Before launching full-scale research projects, Sierra plans to meet with Clemson Extension agents, golf course and athletic field superintendents, sod producers and other industry stakeholders to identify priority issues.
“I want my program to be shaped by the people who rely on it,” she said. “Listening to stakeholders helps ensure that our research is relevant and that the solutions we develop actually work in the field.”
Extension outreach and communication will remain central to her work. Sierra, who speaks both English and Spanish, said she hopes to support the diverse workforce that makes up much of the turfgrass industry.
“Being bilingual allows me to connect with more people,” she said. “I want every stakeholder, regardless of language or background, to be able to access and use the information we produce.”
Commitment to students and education
Although her position focuses on research and Extension, Sierra said she hopes to remain engaged with Clemson students through mentoring, collaboration and training opportunities.
“I’ve always loved working with students,” she said. “Even if I’m not in the classroom, I want to be someone they can reach out to for research experience or career guidance.”
Sierra previously spent more than a decade teaching at Zamorano University in Honduras, where she instructed undergraduate students in plant production, organic agriculture and agricultural systems.
At the University of Florida, she also served as a teaching assistant for advanced turfgrass management and nutrient management courses.
Building a collaborative program
As she begins her work at the Pee Dee REC, Sierra said her focus will be on building partnerships and developing research programs grounded in collaboration.
“Great research happens when we combine scientific rigor with the knowledge of the people who work with turfgrass every day,” she said. “I’m excited to learn from them, work with them and build a program that serves South Carolina.”
Sierra will begin meeting with stakeholders this season through field visits, Extension programs and the launch of preliminary research trials.
