Clemson’s Dr. Kathryn Wiley to deliver Women’s History Month lecture at Presbyterian College

March 17, 2025

Presbyterian College will welcome Dr. Kathryn Wiley, assistant professor of interdisciplinary studies at Clemson University, as the featured speaker for its 2025 Women’s History Month Lecture.

Dr. Wiley will examine the evolving role of women in finance and the challenges of economic equity in today’s world during her presentation at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 26, in Kuhne Auditorium.

Dr. Emily Taylor, associate professor of English and world literatures at PC, said Wiley’s scholarship brings critical insights to ongoing discussions of wealth and gender equity.

“Dr. Wiley’s work on wealth and Black women helps us understand how economic class intersects in important ways with race and gender in our society,” Taylor said. “We are at the beginning of truly documenting how women create, circulate and accumulate wealth in the U.S., and Dr. Wiley’s lecture at PC on the state of modern feminist finance will help us to continue these discussions.”

Wiley’s recent research includes “Beyond Work: Elite Black Women’s Tensions with Middle-Class Status, published in Ethnic and Racial Studies,” and “’This is how you will make it’: Mothers, Othermothers, and Black Women’s Financial Socialization,” featured in the Journal of Family and Economic Issues. She is currently investigating Black women’s credit use and financial planning strategies for generational wealth.

A core faculty member in both Clemson University’s Women’s Leadership and Global Black Studies programs, Wiley has received prestigious fellowships, including the American Association of University Women, American Fellowship and the John L. Warfield Center for African and African American Studies Thematic Fellowship.

Her lecture at PC will address the evolving landscape of feminist finance, exploring how women—particularly women of color—navigate economic structures, develop financial literacy, and challenge systemic barriers to wealth.

The event is free and open to the public.
