Clinton Police Chief Addresses Questions About 287(g) Task Force Model Participation
March 4, 2026The Laurens County Buzz is known for highlighting the good work happening across our community. At the same time, when questions or concerns arise — particularly regarding public safety — our role is to provide clarity and accurate information.
Over the past several weeks, there has been discussion — and in some cases misunderstanding — about the 287(g) Program and the Clinton Police Department’s participation in the Task Force Model.
Chief Michael Addison issued a statement to address those concerns directly and explain what the program is — and what it is not.
“This program is about training and operational clarity, not changing our mission,” Addison said.
What the 287(g) Task Force Model Does
According to Chief Addison, the 287(g) Task Force Model provides structured federal training to selected officers so they understand how immigration law intersects with criminal law during the course of their normal duties.
Immigration-related issues can arise during routine law enforcement activities such as DUI arrests, domestic violence calls, narcotics investigations, and warrant service. The training is designed to ensure officers handle those situations correctly, lawfully, and with proper documentation.
Addison emphasized that the program:
• Does not authorize random status checks
• Does not permit community sweeps
• Does not change the department’s focus from public safety
The model applies only when officers are already engaged in lawful police activity involving criminal conduct.
Strengthening Oversight and Reducing Liability
Chief Addison explained that Clinton Police has worked alongside state and federal partners for years. Participation in the Task Force Model formalizes that cooperation with clearer authority, federal oversight, and standardized procedures.
He noted that the program strengthens supervision, reduces liability, and improves case integrity.
With a department of 31 personnel, Addison said it is critical that officers are properly trained, legally grounded, and operating within clearly defined parameters.
“This is about professionalism, compliance, and preparedness,” Addison stated. “It is not about changing who we are.”
Mission Remains the Same
Chief Addison closed his statement by reaffirming the department’s commitment to the community.
“Our mission remains the same: protect this community, enforce the law fairly, and safeguard the constitutional rights of everyone we encounter.”
Residents who would like more detailed information are encouraged to review the department’s brief explaining the program.
As always, the Buzz will continue to provide accurate information so residents can stay informed about issues that impact our community.
