Clinton Police Remind Public That ATVs Are Not Street Legal
January 25, 2026As hazardous weather continues to impact road conditions, the Clinton Police Department is reminding residents that All-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs), often called four-wheelers, are not legal for use on public roadways in South Carolina.
According to the department, ATVs are designed strictly for off-road use and are not registered or licensed for operation on streets or highways. These vehicles typically do not meet the equipment, registration, or insurance requirements necessary for lawful roadway travel.
Because of this, operating an ATV on public streets or highways — whether inside or outside the Clinton city limits — is prohibited. Officers say individuals found driving ATVs on public roads may face enforcement action, including citations, and the vehicle may be towed at the owner’s expense.
Police also emphasized the increased danger during severe weather. With icy and slick road conditions in parts of the area, riding an ATV on public roads creates a serious safety risk for both the operator and other motorists.
The Clinton Police Department asks for the public’s cooperation in keeping roadways safe and encourages residents to make responsible decisions while winter weather conditions persist.
