Clinton Youth Earns Another SC Junior Golf Championship Title
September 11, 2022Clinton Teen, Mia Carles took to the golf course again this weekend and brings home the title.
In the 15th Harvey Brock Orange Jacket Classic girls 13-18 division, Carles finished the tournament with an overall score of 2-over par 144 to claim the title. The tournament was held September 10 and 11 and included 18 holes of golf each day. Carles is 13 and in the eighth grade.
Carles’ first shot off the tee on Saturday morning brought a hole in one. After first day she was -3. The back nine on the second day played tougher but she kept her composure and with a couple bogeys she still kept the lead and won by 3 strokes. She shot 68 the first day and 75 the second day for the win.
No stranger to finishing first, Carles recently won the SC Junior Golf Association Championship at the Thomas D. Todd All Stars Championship.
“Mia is beginning to really understand the game. She is enjoying strategic preparation and was able to execute the type of shots that the course demanded. She’s fearless and plays very aggressive when the opportunity presents itself because she has confidence in her abilities,” said her father, Javier Carles. “Mia is able to compete with the older girls because she’s been blessed with speed and athleticism which allows her to be one of the longest hitters out there.“
Golf definitely runs in the family. One of eleven children to proud parents, Javier and Shellie Carles, Mia is a natural on the golf course. Two sisters, Phoebe and Sofi, play collegiate D-1 golf. Phoebe is at UNC Asheville has started in every tournament these past 2 years. Sofi attends Presbyterian College where she played in every tournament her freshman year and made All academic/Deans List. Seven of the Carles eleven children play golf, so we are sure to hear more about them on the golf course.
