Coastal Carolina University celebrates topping out at new Indoor Practice Facility

August 14, 2024

Garvin Design Group, HNTB, and Contract Construction joined Coastal Carolina University for a special topping-out celebration at the new Indoor Practice Facility on Tuesday, August 13.

Designed to accommodate various uses by numerous athletics programs, the new 90,000 sf building will serve as the year-round training facility for Coastal Carolina University’s football team. The building’s location just south of Brooks Stadium gives it prominent frontage on University Boulevard and State Route 544. Some key features of the building’s design include:

  • Main entry overlooking University Boulevard and addressing Brooks Stadium across the street
  • Pre-engineered metal building (PEMB) structure that maximizes construction efficiency
  • Gable roof and high ceilings that accommodate special teams’ work
  • Field brick and polished block accents and aluminum trellis systems that reference the academic buildings on campus
  • Clerestory windows, garage bay doors, and double-height glazing that maximize natural light

“We love working with Coastal Carolina University and we’re grateful for the chance to help them with this landmark project,” said Megan Newbold, Garvin Design Group Architect. “Designing the Indoor Practice Facility challenged us to think expansively about the needs of each of the building’s many future users.”

The Indoor Practice Facility is Coastal Carolina University’s first Construction Manager At-Risk (CM-R) project. The project team is composed of Columbia-based Garvin Design Group (Architect of Record) and Contract Construction (General Contractor) and national sports architecture design firm HNTB. The project is expected to be completed in the spring of 2025.

Greg Hughes, President of Contract Construction, said, “We are honored to be a part of such a transformational project for Coastal Carolina athletics. Go Chants!”
