Colliers International’s Joey Shellman volunteers to work with Homes of Hope program in Mexico

March 2, 2015

COLUMBIA, SC – Colliers International’s Joey Shellman was inspired by an internal company philosophy – constantly asking, “What else?” – and applied it to his personal commitment to helping others by volunteering with Homes of Hope, a nonprofit dedicated to providing safe, affordable and energy-efficient housing for low-income and/or homeless families.

“What else?” is a philosophy embraced by Colliers International that encourages employees and associates to always ask what else they can do to help clients and each other. John W. Folsom, President and CEO of Colliers International South Carolina, explained it this way: “If 100 of our staff or associates asked the ‘What else?’ question once a week all year, that would create 5,200 opportunities to serve one another and our clients. The power of that question is extraordinary.”

Shellman is part of the Real Estate Management Services division and serves as a Maintenance Technician for the Tower at 1301 Gervais. When he received an email promoting the “What else?” philosophy, he took the idea to the next level, looking for ways to ask the question in his personal life as well. He found his answer in the organization Homes of Hope.

Shellman had heard of Homes for Hope and sought the chance to get involved when an opportunity arose that struck closer to home. Shellman previously resided in Texas, where he heard stories about some of the living conditions in neighboring Mexico. When Colliers International USA announced a Homes of Hope project in Mexico, he leaped at the opportunity to help his previous neighbors.

Folsom says that Shellman’s response is an example and standard for the rest of the Colliers International team. “One of the core values of Colliers is “service”. We are dedicated to our communities, giving back to them and building them up. By taking the ‘What else?’ question and applying it to his community, Joey has exemplified the true Colliers spirit.”
