November 20, 2015

Three honorees received Columbia College’s highest award, the Medallion, at a dinner and awards ceremony on Thursday, November 5. Recipients of the 2015 Medallion Award are Jim Apple, Terry Collier, and Jane London McIntyre. The Medallion is presented annually to those individuals whom the College wishes to recognize for exceptional accomplishments, leadership, and service.

JimApple-cropJim Apple is among the most respected business leaders in Columbia, and served three full terms (2000-2012) as a trustee for Columbia College, including one term as board chair. His service on the board coincided with a very pivotal time for the College, including a presidential search, campus improvements, and expansion of athletic facilities.

Apple became president of First Citizens Bank in 1994 and was named CEO in 1998. Under his leadership, First Citizens grew to add branches and services, and increased total assets nearly seven-fold to become an invaluable community partner in the rapid growth and development of the Midlands. In 2015, he retired from the bank’s top post. Apple and his wife Gloria reside in Columbia and are members of Washington Street United Methodist Church, the historical founding home of Columbia Women’s College.

TerryCollier-cropTerry Collier of is a real estate and property management entrepreneur who launched a highly successful coastal resort management firm and has helped transform the tourism industry in South Carolina. As the founder of SPM Resorts, he has also leveraged his success to give back to the community, including the establishment of a foundation providing vacation breaks to families with children who have endured traumatic events. Collier has been a member of the U.S. Legislative Caucus, was chairman of the S. C. Tourism Council, and is a former vice chair of South Carolina’s Parks Recreation and Tourism Commission. He served as a Columbia College Trustee from 2011 until 2014. His wife, Linda, is an accomplished scholar and former Columbia College faculty member.

In semi-retirement, the Colliers divide their time between Columbia and Palm Beach, Florida, where they actively support civic organizations, the arts, and historic preservation.

JanieMcIntyre-cropJane London McIntyre is a Columbia College alumna well-known for her executive leadership of non-profit organizations based in Charlotte, N.C. Her long service-oriented career also includes health care administration and elected terms on her local school board. McIntyre found her calling in leading non-profits that served the Charlotte community, but were facing challenges that threatened their future.

She transformed and led the Charlotte YWCA for nearly a decade. Later, from 2009 until her retirement, she piloted United Way of Central Carolinas back to stability and restored community faith in the organization’s ability to help those in need. McIntyre retired earlier this year, and remains active in the Charlotte community with her husband D.G.

Columbia College is proud to welcome the Medallion recipients to the James Milton Ariail Society. They join the ranks of distinguished honorees who have received the College’s highest award since its establishment in 1979.
