Columbia Moe’s Southwest Grill Supports “Saving Eliza”
May 23, 2014Local Burrito Joint Donates $1 for Every Kids’ Meal Sold in May to Support “Cure Sanfilippo Syndrome”
COLUMBIA, SC – Moe’s Southwest Grill is rallying around a great cause by donating $1 for every Kids’ Meal sold at its seven Columbia locations during the month of May to support the local “Saving Eliza” initiative.
Last year, 4-year-old, Columbia native Eliza O’Neil was diagnosed with a rare terminal genetic disease called Sanfilippo Syndrome-Type A. In their quest to find a cure before the disease spreads further, Eliza’s friends and family started a 501(c)3, Cure Sanfilippo Syndrome, to raise the $2.5 million needed to fund a gene therapy trial at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, OH. With more than $750,000 raised, the O’Neil family is getting closer to reaching their goal, but with the deadline quickly approaching, supporters have until June 2014 to pull together the money needed to save Eliza.
Moe’s franchise partners Chris Smith, Josh Snyder and Steve Taylor learned of the local family’s foundation and wanted to help them reach their goal by donating $1 from every kids’ meal sold at all seven Columbia locations – downtown Columbia, Forest Acres, Lexington, Northeast Columbia, West Columbia and Irmo. This fundraiser lasts until May 31 at participating locations only. “We wanted to support a family whose strength and courage has become an inspiration to the entire Columbia community,” said franchise partner Josh Snyder. “They are so close to achieving their goal and we encourage our fans to come out and support the O’Neil family as they persevere to make a better life for their daughter, Eliza.”
