Columbia Names Five New Green Business Members
April 22, 2008COLUMBIA, SC – April 22, 2008 – The city of Columbia recently added five new members to its Green Business recognition program.
The Katie and Irwin Kahn Jewish Community Center recently was awarded a green business seal for improving its environmental record by recycling all office paper products and aluminum, and using only recyclable products when serving up coffee to its members. In living up to its new green mission, the JCCC “green committee” is planning a “Green Week” of activities in June and planting a butterfly garden.
CarMax, Cartridge World of the Midlands, Keep the Midlands Beautiful and PBR of Columbia also were recently recognized as Green Business Members.
Highlights:
CarMax on Jamil Road will serve as the flagship for corporate environmental efforts with a goal of recycling more than 10,000 lbs of material by years end.
Cartridge World of the Midlands is in the business of refilling and manufacturing printer cartridges. Its packaged products, supplies, and goods incorporate as much recyclable content as possible. In addition to purchasing products with less packaging, staff avoids printing unnecessarily and prints in duplex on long documents. The company will begin shredding test paper to use as packaging in its laser boxes.
Keep the Midlands Beautiful has a mission to promote and support environmentally friendly activities and practices.
PBR of Columbia has accomplished goals in all four areas: Recycling and Waste Reduction, Pollution Prevention, Energy Conservation, and Water Conservation. PBR evaporates and recycles all plant waste waters and sends used oil to Kilns to be reused as fuel. The staff recycles everything from cardboard, metals, to electronics saving big having switched to 60% more efficient lighting. The company is researching how to cut energy consumption through alternate technology.
Since implementing the Green Business Member program in September 2007, two dozen companies have applied to receive the city’s Green Business Member seal. Memberships have been awarded to: B-P Barber and Associates, CarMax, Carolina Imports, Cartridge World of the Midlands, Cox and Dinkins, Katie & Irwin Kahn Jewish Community Center, Keep the Midlands Beautiful, PBR of Columbia, Roof Basket Works, Sonoco Recycling, and Studio 2LR, and WLTX TV.
