Communication Corner with Mayor Jay Doyle

January 11, 2026

The City of Georgetown is at a pivotal moment — growth is coming, and nothing can stop it. As your newly elected mayor, I embrace the challenge of guiding this growth in a way that benefits all of us. With your help, we can make this happen responsibly and strategically.

The two main drivers of this growth will be development and annexation. Are we ready? In my opinion, we are not — yet. To prepare, we need a clear, concise plan for how the city will grow and what Georgetown will look like in the future.

To that end, I am adding a building moratorium to the January City Council agenda. If approved, the initial moratorium will last 180 days. During this time, we will hire staff for our Planning and Development Department and lay the groundwork for sustainable growth.

Here’s what I want to see accomplished before the lifting the moratorium:

  • A new Comprehensive Plan
  • Refinement and completion of the Unified Development Ordinances
  • An assessment of our electrical infrastructure
  • An assessment of our water infrastructure
  • An assessment of our wastewater infrastructure
  • An action plan to address flooding and stormwater management

We will form an advisory committee of concerned citizens to assist the Planning Commission and Planning Department in drafting the new Comprehensive Plan. At the same time, we will hire contractors to help with both the Comprehensive Plan and Unified Development Ordinances.

Please view the moratorium as pumping the brakes – not stopping the car. Our goal is to make this pause as short as possible, but we may need to extend it until we are fully prepared to accept applications and have clear, enforceable rules in place.

Together, we can ensure Georgetown grows in a way that strengthens our community and protects our future.
