Community in Schools of the Midlands to celebrate 32nd birthday

November 5, 2019

Community in Schools of the Midlands (CISM) will celebrate the organization’s 32nd birthday on Wednesday, November 6.

The birthday celebration, coined ‘All in for Kids Day’, will take place at CISM’s office and serve as a fundraiser for CISM. In an effort to connect at-risk students with caring adults, educational resources, and support systems to keep them in school, donors are asked to pledge $32. It is CISM’s goal that every student who faces academic challenges and wide spread systems that keep them from success are supported by their community.

City of Columbia Councilwoman Tameika Isaac Devine, will give a few remarks and present the “All in for Kids Day” Proclamation. A 1994 Alumnus who attended the Communities In Schools Five Points School will give a testimony of the program and her success story.

“Often times we forget where we all started prior to achieving success in life,” said Tanika Epps, Executive Director of CISM. “Our organization empowers kids to stay in school and help them build resiliency to overcome everyday challenges.”

Communities In Schools of the Midlands has served over 15 schools across the Midlands to include schools in: Richland School District One, Richland School District Two, Lexington School District Two, Epworth Children’s Home and the SC Department of Juvenile Justice. The program currently serves a total of seven schools to include: William S. Sandel Elementary, Herbert A. Wood Elementary, Watkins-Nance Elementary, St. Andrews Middle, Pine Ridge Middle, Columbia High and the Birchwood School at the SC Department of Juvenile Justice. Staff consist of the Executive Team and 8 Site Coordinators who provide intervention services to nearly 2,500 children annually who are identified with early warning signs of dropping out of school prior to the age of 17.
