Community Rallies to Support Injured American Legion Riders One Week After Motorcycle Accident
March 9, 2026One week after a serious motorcycle accident left two members of American Legion Post 25 riders with life-altering injuries, the Laurens County community continues to rally in prayer and support as both men face a long road to recovery.
Jim Peterson and Jim Massey, members of the American Legion Riders with Copeland-Davidson Post 25 in Laurens, were seriously injured in the accident that shocked fellow Legion members and the broader community. In the days since, both men have undergone surgeries, and additional procedures are expected in the weeks ahead.
There is encouraging news for Peterson. While his injuries were significant, he is expected to make a full recovery.
Massey’s injuries, however, were far more severe. While he continues to receive medical care, it may be some time before doctors are able to determine the full extent of any permanent disabilities he may face.
What is already known is that modifications will need to be made to Massey’s home to help him safely navigate daily life once he returns home. Those renovations could include accessibility changes such as ramps, widened doorways, or other accommodations, though the exact scope and cost are not yet known. Organizers expect the expenses could reach several thousand dollars.
To help offset those costs, American Legion Post 25 is organizing a community fundraiser, with assistance from the Laurens County Buzz in helping coordinate and share details about the effort. For many years, the members of Post 25 have been known for raising money and providing support for others in need throughout Laurens County. Now, the group that has so often stepped forward to help others is asking the community to stand with them as they support one of their own.
Community members who would like to contribute have several options to donate:
• Take a check directly to United Community Bank, designated for the American Legion Post 25 fundraiser.
• Donate by cash or check at participating local businesses, where donation jars labeled for the fundraiser will be placed at the counter. A list of participating locations will be announced soon.
• Donate online directly to the Post 25 fundraiser through their secure payment link.
Organizers say these donation options were intentionally chosen to avoid processing fees and ensure that every dollar goes directly toward helping Massey and his family during the recovery process.
“The prayers, calls, and messages we’ve received this past week have meant so much to both families,” said Kevin Farnsworth, Post Commander of American Legion Post 25. “Laurens County has always been a community that takes care of its own, and we are grateful for the support.”
Post 25 leaders say both men still have several surgeries ahead of them, and they ask the community to continue keeping Peterson and Massey in their thoughts as they face the weeks and months of recovery ahead.
