Community Welcomes City Year Columbia Into New Home

March 10, 2009

COLUMBIA, SC – March 10, 2009 – Over 75 community supporters welcomed City Year Columbia into their new home this past Wednesday at an Open House celebration. Their new corporate headquarters are now located at 1919 Hampton Street.

The Open House provided the community an opportunity to learn more about the organization and thank the staff and 24 young corps members for their commitment to community service.

City Year is built on the idea that young people can change the world.  As the largest national AmeriCorps organization, City Year gives 24 young adults the opportunity to give a year of their lives to change the world through service.  These diverse young people are placed on teams that serve many needs within Columbia, focusing on assistance in Richland One elementary schools as well as leadership development for middle- and high-school aged students.  These corps members act as tutors, role models, and mentors to Columbia’s most at-risk students.

City Year seeks to inspire all Columbia citizens to improve this community through service.  To learn more about how City Year is putting idealism to work every day and how you too can be the change, go to www.cityyear.org/columbia, or join the City Year Columbia facebook group.  City Year has informal Open House hours every Friday from 12:30-1:30 and invites you to tour South Carolina’s new Headquarters for Idealism and speak with a corps member about how you can make a difference in your neighborhood and the world.
