May 9, 2022

Sandlapper Elementary School recently received the Magnet Schools of America (MSA), 2022 National New and Emerging Merit Award of Excellence. MSA made the announcement at its national conference in Nevada last month.

Sandlapper Principal Connie May was present to receive this well-deserved national award. May says the recognition celebrates the important and incredible work of teachers, staff, students, and parents. “Sandlapper is Richland School District Two’s Elementary Computer Science magnet program and is dedicated to growing with our community, establishing a world-class school that embraces diversity, and empowering student achievement through technology explorations and creativity to ensure lifelong success,” said May.

The purpose of the Computer Science Immersion School (CSIS) is to prepare students in work, life, and citizenship by providing computer science coding skills to become effective collaborators and communicators, computational and creative thinkers, and problem solvers with a global perspective.

Tim Swick is the Lead Teacher for CSIS. “As the only Richland Two location specializing in computer science immersion, we are excited for our success in establishing a whole school magnet focused on implementing innovative, integrated computer science units and we are elated to receive national recognition by MSA,” said Swick.

Also as recently announced, Sandlapper fifth-grader, Samantha Williams, received First place in the 2022 Magnet Schools of America Poster Contest for the elementary school level and was selected as the national overall winner for the contest. Williams brilliantly expressed all five of MSA’s pillars that include: Diversity, Innovative Curriculum and Professional Development, Academic Excellence, Leadership, and Family and Community Partnerships.
