CONA’s Dr. Mitchell serves victims of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico

Dr. David Mitchell of Carolina Orthopaedic & Neurosurgical Associates (CONA) and a team of a 33 volunteers from SC traveled to Puerto Rico recently to aid in the relief efforts for Hurricane Maria. Dr. Mitchell was the only orthopaedic surgeon on the SC team and together they provided general medical care for up to 100 residents per day. The effort was funded by the Federal government, under the National Disaster Medical System, a part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
“We went to assess area hospitals in Puerto Rico so they could personally tell us what was needed. When there is a disaster, you have to be very flexible,” said Dr. Mitchell. “Things that seem easy to do are not; we helped many people–from setting broken bones to general medical needs.”
An accomplished, published and well-known surgeon, Dr. Mitchell is considered an inventor in the field of orthopaedic surgery. This was his first time participating in the National Disaster Medical System and he hopes to have the opportunity to do so again.
