We all know the color wheel can produce endless shades and color variations, but the experts at Pantone have selected a group of 210 shades to officially add this year, bringing the total Pantone color palette to 2,310 shades.

The last major addition of Pantone shades came about three years ago, but they aren’t arbitrary. Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, says their additions reflect trends from consumers using their palette. Here is a breakdown of the new shades and what they represent:

1.   Oranges. A color that moves in and out of fashion frequently, the new shades draw inspiration from cultures that embrace the color more readily with colors like Dragon Fire; Exotic Orange and Aura Orange, as well as from spicy and tropical foods like Chili Oil and Mango Mojito.

2.   Pinks. Another trend in culture represented in color is the attention to being healthy. This is reflected in shades of pink that range from soft Rose Quartz, Ballet Slipper and Cherry Blossom to more vibrant and playful shades like Love Potion and Pink Peacock.

3.   Blues. In a reflection of our ever-busy lifestyle, the new blue shades revolve around ethereal feelings and vacation destinations. With colors including Ibiza Blue, Island Paradise, Zen Blue and Blue Horizon, we see a nod to the need for serenity and relaxation.

4.   Minerals & Stones. Drawing inspiration from their prevalence in fashion home and interior industries there are several new black and white shades like Onyx, Black Beauty, Tofu and Sugar Swizzle as well as from the growing organic movement with colors including Almond Milk, Pistachio Shell, and Soybean.

5.   Bright Yellows. Minion Yellow color is the standout shade in this palette, but it also draws inspiration from all things exotic including Golden Kiwi, Yellow Pear and Lemon Verbena.

6.   Greens. Continuing to be inspired by nature and food, these new green shades include Guacamole, Split Pea, Lush Meadow and Kalamata.

Adding colors to an ever-growing palette is more than expanding inspiration and adding marketing tools. Eiseman said it best when she said, “Our job is to drill down and take it one step further to fill the needs of the emotions they express.”
