Creating Wow! Conference kicks off in Charleston
November 10, 2011Speakers focus on growing the economy with bio-based innovation jobs
CHARLESTON, SC – November 8, 2011 – From the leaders of the largest biotech organizations in the world to Nephron Pharmaceutical executives who announced plans for 700 high-wage, high impact jobs in Lexington County, the SCBIO-SCMedTech Creating Wow! Conference kicks off Wednesday at 2 p.m. with a national focus on creating jobs.
We are clearly seeing the momentum growing in life sciences in South Carolina, said Michael Bolick, chairman of SCBIO. The caliber of speakers, and the type of activity we are seeing in this state is an indication that South Carolina life sciences businesses are about to break out to create high-impact jobs that change the state.
The conference features: James Greenwood, president and CEO of BIO, the world’s largest biotechnology industry organization, and Joseph Hammang, PhD, senior director of Pfizer, the world’s largest research-based drug company, and Frank M. Torti, MD, the FDA’s first chief science officer and former interim head of the FDA.
In addition, Nephron Pharmaceutical executives Bill and Lou Kennedy are expected to address the conference at noon Thursday and discuss their interest in South Carolina after announcing a $313 million, 700-job plant in the Midlands last month. Those jobs are expected to average $70,000 a year in annual pay — double the Lexington County average. The jobs will require college level training as well.
