Cultivating Progress: Laurens County Breaks Ground on Innovative Ag Center

August 9, 2023

The Laurens County community is abuzz with anticipation over the groundbreaking ceremony for the much-awaited Laurens County Agricultural Center draws near. Scheduled for Saturday, August 12 at 10:00 am, the ceremony will take place at the designated site on Osborne Road, Laurens, SC 29360 (also known as the site of the old exchange building). The event signifies a significant step forward in the county’s commitment to fostering agricultural growth, education, and community engagement.

It is thought by many that the new Ag Center will become the hub for agricultural activities. County Council and a committee embarked on a comprehensive search for the right architect and builder. Architect GMK was selected as the architect and builder, recognized for their expertise in creating functional and innovative spaces

At the heart of this endeavor lies the commitment to create a multi-faceted venue that serves as an epicenter for agricultural excellence within Laurens County. Central to this vision is the new home for Clemson Extension services, symbolizing the partnership between academia and practical application.

The Ag Center is poised to host a wide spectrum of events, ranging from educational agricultural expos to elegant banquets, exhilarating equestrian shows, captivating flower exhibitions, and even concerts. The Ag Center is conceptualized with versatility in mind, ensuring it can cater to both grand-scale events, rivalling those held at the renowned Heritage Park Amphitheater, and more intimate gatherings such as corporate functions.

One of the most promising facets of the Ag Center lies in its projected economic impact. By attracting a diverse range of agricultural events that are often hosted in neighboring counties and even states, Laurens County stands to gain a significant boost to the local economy. Businesses, hospitality services, and the community at large will reap the rewards of a bustling calendar of events that draw in both residents and visitors.

“I am filled with anticipation as we break ground on this project! As the largest endeavor within the capital projects sales tax initiative, it gives me great joy to witness the emergence of this incredible agricultural center here in the heart of Laurens. Showcasing the level of agricultural expertise of the Laurens County community holds deep significance for me,” said Laurens County Chairman Brown Patterson. “The history dates back to 1938 when the Fairground Association was established, hosting a plethora of events. Among these cherished memories from my upbringing, the livestock shows stand out, offering friends and neighbors a platform to display their hogs and cattle. Witnessing this property’s transformation into a facility dedicated to serving diligent farmers within our community gives me great pride.”

The Laurens County Ag Center is one of the projects that was approved and will be funded by the Capital Sales Tax initiative.

The community is invited to attend the groundbreaking ceremony on Saturday, August 12 at 10 am, 308 Osborne Road, Laurens, SC.
