Davis & Floyd welcomes engineering students for cooperative education programs

Davis & Floyd  welcomed six new engineering students to the firm’s spring 2017 co-op and internship program. The program is for civil engineering majors at South Carolina colleges and universities and provides students the opportunity to gain educational hands-on experience in their area of study while exposing them to various engineering disciplines.

Davis & Floyd’s co-op program consists of three 16-week periods each year, following the university academic calendar.  Participants are offered opportunities based on the firm’s work load and are placed where their education, talents and interest best match the staffing needs at the time of their participation. Managers and mentors that support the program in each of the five offices.  Examples of the type of work students may do include supporting the engineering staff with generating and producing various reports, assisting the design team with researching property uses and codes for a defined county or municipality, assisting the engineering staff with conducting field investigations, and serving as a member of the survey field team.

“Our co-op and intern program was implemented to develop our next generation of engineers,” said Greg McElhannon, project manager and co-op program leader. “It allows serious engineering students the opportunity to experience real world engineering practices with the support of a full-time, on-site staff mentor, and it gives our firm a chance to observe and access new talent that will soon be joining the job market.”

The following are participants and the office in which they are currently working: 

Charleston

• Christopher Major, originally from Bluffton, South Carolina, is a junior civil engineering student from Clemson University.
• Kevin Shaw, a returning intern, is originally from Chester, New Hampshire and is a senior civil engineering student from The Citadel.
• Tres Litten, originally from Thomasville, North Carolina, is a senior civil engineering student from The Citadel. 

Columbia

• Zane McGhee, originally from King, North Carolina, is a senior civil engineering student from the University of South Carolina.
• Kara Fugate is originally from Myrtle Beach and is a senior civil engineering student from the University of South Carolina.

Greenville

• Ryan Love is originally from Charlotte, North Carolina and is a civil engineering student from Clemson University.

To participate in the program, students must be a rising junior or senior with a declared civil engineering major at a South Carolina college or university, and they must have completed all general engineering courses while maintaining a 3.0 grade point average.  On campus interviews for 2017 summer and fall programs candidates will take place in early March.
