Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Donates $50K to Fight Georgetown Hunger

December 10, 2025

Members of the Georgetown Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. announced a generous donation this week to help several Georgetown County food pantries which are facing growing demand as families struggle with rising costs and recent changes to SNAP benefits.

Facilitated through the Waccamaw Community Foundation, the beneficiaries of this support include St. Cyprian’s Outreach Center, Friendship Place, Baskerville Food Pantry, Andrews Pantry and Helping Hands of Georgetown.

The need to support these pantries became clear as members watched food insecurity grow in area schools and throughout the community.

“Food insecurity is a growing concern both nationally and here in Georgetown,” said Chapter President Dr. Barbara Samuels Nesmith. “And with recent SNAP changes, many children and families are losing benefits they rely on.”

She added that the chapter chose to focus its support on organizations they know who are serving families on a daily basis and have been challenged by the increased demand for services.

Many families are facing difficult choices as the cost of living continues to increase. Nesmith hopes the support provided will relieve some of the strain families are experiencing.

“We hope that it’ll make a difference. We hope a child is not hungry. We hope a child or a family is able to do something else with the funds that they have,” she said. “Perhaps this will fill a void.”

The Georgetown Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority is a vivacious chapter of college-educated, public-service minded women, who have been serving Georgetown County, South Carolina since 1968. The chapter focuses its programming around the Five Point Thrusts of Economic Development, Educational Development, International Awareness and Involvement, Physical and Mental Health, and Political Awareness and Involvement.
