Denmark Technical College inducts four into Alumni Hall of Fame

Denmark Technical College honored four distinguished alumni during its Second Annual Alumni Hall of Fame Induction, held as part of the 8th Annual President’s Legacy Scholarship Gala. A highlight of the college’s homecoming festivities, the ceremony recognized individuals who have made significant contributions to their professions, communities and alma mater.

“Each of these inductees represents the very best of Denmark Technical College. Their dedication, leadership,  and contributions have had a lasting impact on their fields and on this institution. We are proud to celebrate their legacies and the example they set for future generations of Panthers,” said A. Clifton Myles, Ph.D., provost and executive vice president of Denmark Technical College.

“These inductees exemplify the very best of Denmark Technical College, and their contributions continue to inspire us all. As we honor their legacies, we reaffirm our commitment to cultivating future leaders who will carry on their tradition of excellence,” added James W. Bowden Sr., area commissioner and president of the Denmark Technical College National Alumni Association.

DTC 2025 Hall of Fame Inductees

Tina Gathers Brown, Class of 1988, was recognized for her achievements in cosmetology and healthcare. A native of Ruffin, South Carolina, she earned an associate degree in cosmetology from Denmark Technical College before establishing a successful 15-year career as a salon owner in Atlanta. She later transitioned into healthcare, working as a patient access specialist for a decade. Now residing in Summerville, South Carolina, Brown continues to make an impact on industry.

William R. Cantey was posthumously honored for his lifelong commitment to education and community service. A dedicated Denmark Technical College alumnus, he served as president of the National Alumni Association and worked as an academic counselor and Dean of students at the college in the 1980s. Cantey was also active in organizations such as the Orangeburg Elks Lodge, the Orangeburg County Development Commission and Trinity United Methodist Church. After attending Denmark Technical College, he furthered his education at South Carolina State University. His legacy of leadership and service remains an inspiration.

William D. Collins, Class of 1956, was recognized for nearly 70 years of dedication to Denmark Technical College. After graduating, he returned in 1959 as an employee, shaping generations of students as a carpentry instructor. His contributions earned him numerous accolades, including the South Carolina Technical College Association Educator of the Year Award and the Presidential Award. He is also the namesake of the William D. Collins Golden Alumni Service Award, which honors alumni for lifelong service to the college. Collins, who also earned a degree from Voorhees University, remains a respected figure in education and the community.

Leroy W. Ruff was posthumously honored for his pioneering contributions to barbering education. A Denmark Technical College graduate, he returned in 1966 as a barbering instructor and later became head of the barbering department, where he taught for 40 years. Under his leadership, more than 500 students graduated and successfully passed the South Carolina Barber’s Board Exam. He was the first recipient of the Bronner Brothers National Vision Award for excellence in barbering education and received numerous honors, including the South Carolina Technical Education Educator of the Year Award and the Denmark Technical College Distinguished Alumni Award. His legacy continues through the Leroy W. Ruff Barbering Scholarship.

“Our Hall of Fame honors those who have exemplified excellence and service. These four remarkable individuals have left an indelible mark on Denmark Technical College and beyond. Their stories continue to inspire our students to strive for greatness,” said Kevin Whitt, chairman of the Denmark Technical College Area Commission.

“As we continue to build on Denmark Technical College’s rich history, it is important that we recognize those who have shaped our institution and the communities we serve. Their achievements remind us of the transformative power of education and the lasting impact our alumni can have on the world. We look forward to continuing this tradition of honoring those who have paved the way for future generations,” added Todd.
