Do Antioxidants Make You Live Long and Prosper? EngenuitySC’s Science Café with Dr. Kenneth Tew
December 1, 2014Tuesday, December 9, 2014, from 6:00-7:30 p.m. at Speakeasy in Five Points
Ever think about the science behind why we breathe oxygen? Get answers from Dr. Kenneth Tew, international leader in drug discovery and development, as he explains his research on human dependency on oxygen, the problems associated with oxygen and the benefits of antioxidants (yes, supplements!) to your health at EngenuitySC’s Science Café on Tuesday, December 9, 2014, from 6:00-7:30 p.m. at Speakeasy in Five Points.
Dr. Tew (PhD, DSc)’s talk will delve into his research on oxygen and redox from within the SC COBRE program at the Medical University of South Carolina, where he is a professor and chair for the Department of Cell and Molecular Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics.
His earlier research was pivotal in the design of treatments for hormone refractory prostate cancer. More recently, his research has been instrumental in the late-stage clinical testing of three novel drugs; one shows promise in treating ovarian and lung cancer, and another has potential as a modifier of bone marrow mediated immune function.
Currently working to understand how cancer cells develop resistance to different drugs, Dr. Tew’s discoveries have suggested links between cancer and Alzheimer’s. The creation of a new knockout mouse (genetically engineered with one or more inoperable genes) may provide a useful model for studying these diseases.
Dr. Tew serves as the John C. West Endowed Chair in Translational Cancer Therapeutics at MUSC and is the Co-Program Leader of the Developmental Cancer Therapeutics Program at Hollings Cancer Center.
Elected by his colleagues, Dr. Tew has also served as Chair of Drug Discovery & Regulatory Affairs for the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics (2011-2013), and currently serves as Chair for the Section of Pharmaceutical Sciences of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (2012-2015).
