Doctoral student invited to prestigious Lindau Nobel Laureate meeting

CLEMSON, SC — Clemson University economics Ph.D. candidate Anna Chorniy was invited to attend the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting on Economics Sciences this month in Lindau, Germany.
These annual scientific conferences invite Nobel Prize winners to engage in discussion with different generations of scientists through forums and presentations from researchers around the world. Nineteen Nobel Laureates, including Peter Diamond, Robert Mundell, Alvin Roth and Vernon Smith, will take part in this year’s meeting. The economics meetings have taken place every three years since 2004.
Chorniy was selected as Clemson University’s nominee for the 2014 meeting, the first Clemson student to be invited and participate as a young researcher by the Lindau Review Panel.
“After I was nominated by the economics department and then by Clemson, I realized that it was really happening,” Chorniy said. “For my success I am particularly grateful to my advisers at Clemson University: professors Tom Mroz, Dan Miller and Michael Maloney. I am very excited to meet other young economists from all over the world. One of us could be a future Laureate.”
Chorniy’s research focuses on health economics, labor economics and industrial organization. She currently is interested in how mergers affect the generosity of Medicare plans and the effects of ADHD treatment sequencing on patient health and social outcomes. Her ADHD research has proposed models for dynamic treatment decisions for children that may lead to improved health, social, behavioral and educational outcomes.
Chorniy’s opportunity to study Medicaid claims data was made possible through the cooperation between Clemson Computing and Information Technology and South Carolina’s Office of Revenue and Fiscal Affairs. Through this partnership Chorniy has had the opportunity to have access to data sets that have proved to be invaluable in her research.

Walker Department of Economics. “She has proven herself as an emerging scholar and this experience is a defining moment in her academic career.”
Chorniy is the Myles Wallace Graduate Fellow at Clemson for 2014-15. She previously was the recipient of the Charles G. Koch Annual Fellowship, Institute for Humane Studies Fellowship, John E. Walker Fellowship and the BB&T Center for Economic Education Fellowship.
In the spring, Chorniy received the 2014 Clemson College of Business and Behavioral Science Graduate Research Excellence Award and in 2013 she presented at the rising star session during the International Industrial Organization Society’s annual meeting.
