Dominion Energy invests $25,000 in United Way of the Midlands to support the Midlands Reading Consortium
February 8, 2021Dominion Energy has presented United Way of the Midlands with a $25,000 sponsorship to provide support for the Midlands Reading Consortium (MRC).
Dominion Energy will serve as the Presenting Partner for the MRC program through the 2020-2021 school year to help us serve, educate and bring resources to our future scholars of tomorrow.
United Way’s Midlands Reading Consortium (MRC) aims to improve reading engagement for elementary students, pre-kindergarten to 2nd grade, in school districts across Richland, Lexington, Newberry, Fairfield and Orangeburg counties. MRC addresses low reading proficiency in our community by supplementing and enhancing shared reading experiences between volunteer tutors and their striving readers. MRC provides free training workshops, tutoring materials, and the support needed to help volunteer tutors work with their students on a weekly basis throughout the school year.
“Early literacy is essential to a student’s success in school and beyond,” said Rodney Blevins, president of Dominion Energy South Carolina. “This is an investment in a program that is building a sustainable future for our community.”
MRC also works to enhance and supplement a love of reading for elementary school students throughout the Midlands by providing a library of services that include guest reading opportunities, parent engagement events and book distributions.
“We are grateful for companies like Dominion Energy who invest in our children and community,” said Sara Fawcett, United Way of Midlands President and CEO. “MRC is one of our longstanding programs which has been able to pivot with everything our community is experiencing. We’ve been able to help more students than ever while continuing to provide opportunities for volunteers to work with the students. This donation will help us continue to have a positive impact on our community.”
Last year, MRC served almost 700 students in Richland, Lexington, Newberry, Fairfield and Orangeburg counties with the help of more than 400 volunteers.
