On April 8, 2025, Don Herriott, former Board Chair of the South Carolina Research Authority (SCRA), was honored with the Order of the Palmetto by Governor Henry McMaster. The award was officially presented by South Carolina State Senator Jason Elliott during a ceremony recognizing Herriott’s significant contributions to the state’s economic and technological advancement. Under Herriott’s leadership, SCRA has fostered innovation and supported numerous research initiatives, bolstering South Carolina’s position in the technology sector.
The Order of the Palmetto, established in 1971 by Governor John C. West, is South Carolina’s highest civilian honor. It is awarded by the governor to individuals who have demonstrated extraordinary lifetime achievement, service, and contributions of national or statewide significance. Recipients receive a certificate signed by the governor, bearing the state seal and an image of a palmetto tree, symbolizing the state’s appreciation for their exceptional dedication.
From serving as President & CEO of Roche Carolina to leading Roche Global Chemical Manufacturing with operations spanning multiple continents, Don has been at the forefront of transformative innovation. His leadership helped bring a $600 million pharmaceutical manufacturing investment to our state—an achievement that continues to fuel South Carolina’s economy.
Following his distinguished career at Roche, Don continued his service by shaping the next generation of economic development as Director of Innovista Partnerships at the University of South Carolina.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Don is a small business owner, a dedicated civic leader, and a steadfast advocate for South Carolina’s growth and success. He has served on the Executive Committee of the South Carolina Council on Competitiveness, as the founding Chairman of The School Foundation, and as Chair of the SCRA Board for more than seven years.
This accolade reflects Don Herriott’s unwavering commitment to advancing research and innovation within South Carolina. His efforts have not only propelled SCRA’s mission but have also significantly contributed to the state’s economic growth and technological development. The recognition serves as a testament to Herriott’s impactful leadership and enduring dedication to the betterment of South Carolina and its citizens.
