Duke Energy Kicks off Share the Warmth Campaign in the Carolinas
December 9, 2009More than $3 million was contributed to 80 agencies in 2008-09
CHARLOTTE, NC – December 9, 2009 – As colder weather and the holidays approach, Duke Energy Carolinas is kicking off its annual Share the Warmth campaign to help people who need assistance paying for their winter heating bills.
In the 2008-09 campaign, Duke Energy contributed more than $3 million to Share the Warmth in the Carolinas, including:
- Customer contributions of almost $700,000.
- Matching funds from the Duke Energy Foundation. Duke Energy matches all customer contributions to the program up to $500,000.
- Funds from Duke Energy’s Bulk Power Marketing Group, working through the Foundation for the Carolinas and AdvanceSC.
We know many people in our service territory are still struggling in these economic times, and we’re hearing from local assistance agencies that the needs are greater than ever, said Brett Carter, president of Duke Energy Carolinas. Share the Warmth is an easy way for all of us to help our neighbors and friends who need it, because no one should be cold this winter or have to choose between a warm home and other necessities.
Share the Warmth began in 1985. Since then, Duke Energy and its customers have contributed in excess of $31 million to more than 80 local agencies in North Carolina and South Carolina. One hundred percent of the donated funds are given to local agencies for distribution to families and individuals. (A list of agencies is attached.)
In November, Duke Energy Carolinas included information in customer bills describing the Share the Warmth program and how to participate. All contributions are tax deductible and 100 percent of the contributions go directly to the participating agencies. Funds are provided through March, when the heating season ends.
Additional information on Share the Warmth and how to make a donation is available at http://www.duke-energy.com/community/programs/share-the-warmth.asp.
