EdVenture Children’s Museum CEO Catherine Horne Named Noyce Leadership Fellow
May 6, 2009COLUMBIA, SC – May 6, 2009 – Catherine Wilson Horne, president and CEO of EdVenture Children’s Museum, has been named a Noyce Leadership Fellow by The Noyce Foundation in collaboration with the Association of Science Technology Centers (ASTC). Horne is one of only 17 CEOs worldwide selected for the sponsored fellowship, and one of 10 in the United States. She is the only person selected from a children’s museum.
The Noyce Fellows were chosen by senior professionals practicing in the fields of science and education. The Noyce Leadership Institute seeks to increase the public impact of science in the 21st century by bringing together leaders of science centers and related institutions from around the globe to act as change agents at the crossroads of societal trends, global issues, and the cutting edge of informal science.
As a Noyce Fellow, Horne will gain access to valuable cutting-edge resources, including knowledge, tools, best practices, and professional networks to assist her in leading EdVenture’s strategic direction in science, math, engineering and technology across the Midlands and South Carolina.
Horne will use this award as a springboard to create a major initiative providing educational resources in leadership development, career exploration in the sciences, and cutting-edge scientific activities for students in grades 6-12 via afterschool programs, internships and service learning opportunities at EdVenture.
I am honored to be recognized for this esteemed fellowship, says Horne. I intend to use support generated through this fellowship to develop and implement an innovative community collaboration designed to provide extracurricular scientific learning opportunities for all South Carolina youth, particularly those currently classified as ‘at-risk.’ This will be a multi-year commitment by EdVenture to science program development and the development of the next generation of scientists for our state.
This initiative has grown out of EdVenture’s Future Leaders program, which has been supported by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the Lipscomb Foundation, and Bank of America.
The Noyce Institute bears the name of Robert Noyce, co-founder of Intel and inventor of the integrated circuit. His work in leading science, engineering and technology to a whole new level of innovation – as well as the creation of new industries – is legendary. Known for his integrity, authenticity, character, inclusiveness, and continuous innovation, his legacy continues to serve as a standard for leaders today.
ASTC is an organization of science centers and museums dedicated to furthering the public understanding of science among increasingly diverse audiences. ASTC provides professional development for the science center field, promotes best practices, supports effective communication, strengthens the position of science centers within the community at large, and fosters the creation of successful partnerships and collaborations.
