Hour of Code Program Provides Computer Science Basics Using Star Wars, Flappy Bird, and Minecraft Themes

COLUMBIA, SC – EdVenture Children’s Museum will host three Hour of Code workshops on March 18, April 15 and May 21 from 3:30-4:30 p.m. at the museum. Hour of Code participants at EdVenture will learn important computer skills through exciting themes including Star Wars, Flappy Bird and Minecraft.

Hour of Code is a fun and interactive computer science program for beginners designed to demonstrate that anyone can learn the basics. The program can also be used as a tool for learning valuable problem solving, logic and creativity skills that can be applied outside of the world of coding.

”Presently in South Carolina, there is no curriculum standard for computer science,” said Charner Boney, museum educator at EdVenture. “By hosting Hour of Code workshops at EdVenture we can teach children in our community the basics of computer science who may not have otherwise been given the opportunity to learn the subject.”

The first workshop on Friday, March 18 will allow students to build a galaxy of code, Star Wars style. Students will learn how to program droids, join forces with Rey to guide BB-8 through a space mission, and team up with Princess Leia to build their own game featuring R2-D2 or C-3PO.

On Friday, April 15, students will learn to program their own customized version of Flappy Bird. Learn to use drag-and-drop technology to create a unique Flappy Shark, Flappy Santa or even Flappy EDDIE. Participants will also be able to play completed games on smartphones and share them with friends and family through a unique link!

Students will embark on a Minecraft adventure like never before during the final Hour of Code on Saturday, May 21. Participants will use blocks of code to take Minecraft characters, Steve and Alex on an exploration through the Minecraft world using the same concepts that make the video game work.

Participants must provide their own device (tablet or computer) for each Hour of Code workshop. This program is suitable for ages 8 and older. Hour of code is free with museum admission.
