EdVenture will open part of the day on Thanksgiving to serve traditional holiday meal

November 16, 2016

EdVenture will be open to the public on Thanksgiving morning from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m.  In addition, museum staff and volunteers will serve an EdVenture-made Thanksgiving feast from 11 a.m.–1 p.m. for the first 250 visitors who register for the meal upon entering that day.

“Our staff works all year with families, both in the museum and in the community through our many programs, who could use a place for family interaction on what might be their only day off from work,” said Karen Coltrane, EdVenture president and CEO.  “And given that the number of EdVenture visitors on public assistance has increased 98 percent over the past two years, we thought we could help give back by offering a free Thanksgiving meal for families with young children.  Happily, several generous museum supporters made contributions to cover the food cost, our museum chefs are showing off their expertise, and we have volunteers coming to help serve.”

Turkey will be served with mac-n-cheese, potatoes with gravy, green beans and rolls, with tea, water, and lemonade to drink. The meal will be topped off with southern-style banana pudding.

“When we opened for limited hours last spring on Easter, it was one of our busiest Sundays of the year.” added Coltrane.  “We suspect on Thanksgiving morning we might see grandparents and aunts and uncles enjoying time in the museum with little ones while preparations are going on at home for the afternoon and evening.  We view ourselves as a service organization, so this is another tangible way we can serve.”
