Ellie Basaly, M.D., Named Palmetto Health/University of South Carolina School of Medicine 2013 Resident of the Year

COLUMBIA, SC – July 24, 2013 – Ellie Basaly, M.D., of the Internal Medicine Residency Program, received the Palmetto Health/University of South Carolina School of Medicine 2013 Resident of the Year award. Basaly was selected from 10 nominees for her outstanding achievements in leadership and success. Basaly received a plaque, a certificate and $2,500 for winning the award, which has been a Palmetto Health tradition since 2002. The award acknowledges residents’ medical knowledge and abilities, as well as their commitment to Palmetto Health’s values of compassion, dignity, excellence, integrity and team work.
In Basaly’s award nomination, Mary Beth Poston, M.D., director of the Internal Medicine Residency Program said, I’m not even sure she is aware of how far beyond the call of duty she goes on a regular basis. She truly leads by example and never asks anything of others she is not willing to do herself. Ellie is renowned for being willing to go well beyond her responsibilities to ensure patients and colleagues get what they need.
Basaly, a native of Tran, Iran, received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Vancover, British Columbia, a master’s degree from the University of South Carolina Arnold School of Public Health and her medical degree from Saba University School of Medicine in Toronto. Her professional affiliations include the American Medical Association, the South Carolina Medical Association, the American College of Physicians, the Palmetto Health Resident’s Council, the Graduate Medical Education Council and the American Medical Women’s Association.
Basaly is currently practicing in the Georgetown Hospital System at the Waccamaw Community Hospital in Murrells Inlet, S.C. A benefit of a residency program is a large percentage of the physicians stay in the state of their program to practice medicine. In 2012, 49 percent of this program’s graduating resident class remained in South Carolina to practice.
Nine other residents nominated for the award include Sarah Aultman M.D., OB/Gyn; Stephanie Chapman M.D., General Psychiatry; Stephen Hill M.D., Family Medicine; Loren Jack M.D., Ophthalmology; Kallie Law, D.M.D., Dental; Katherine Mastriani M.D., Surgery; Joshua Skaggs M.D., Emergency Medicine; Caryn Sorge M.D., Pediatrics; Justin Walker M.D., Orthopaedics. Each of them received a certificate and $250 award.

As Columbia, S.C.’s only teaching institution, Palmetto Health is the clinical home of the Palmetto Health/University of South Carolina School of Medicine’s residency programs. The physicians-in-training complete their Graduate Medical Education (GME) at Palmetto Health by practicing medicine in more than 20 areas of specialty under the supervision of highly experienced attending physicians. Residency is the last step of post-secondary training for physicians before they begin independent practice.
