Emilye Mobley Named Vice President for Student Development at S.C. Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics

July 18, 2010

COLUMBIA, SC – July 13, 2010 – The S.C. Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics (GSSM) is pleased to announce that Emilye Mobley has joined the GSSM administration as the new vice president for student development.

In this role, Mobley is responsible for all non-academic programs including admissions, residence life, student activities, health services, athletics, counseling and college placement.

“My vision for student development at GSSM is to make the out-of-class experience as educationally purposeful as the in-class experience,” Mobley said. “While supporting the Governor’s School academic program, I will work in conjunction with faculty and staff to continue to buttress our students’ holistic development through leadership, service, and the co-curricular.”

With a research background in character development and organizational behavior, Mobley said she hopes to enhance the college preparatory experience that GSSM students receive.

“One of my initial goals is to work with students and colleagues to assist students in developing their non-academic portfolios, giving prospective institutions and programs a broader sense of their cognitive and non-cognitive qualifications and attributes.”

Prior to coming to GSSM, Ms. Mobley worked throughout the Southeast serving small colleges in a variety of roles including vice president for student affairs at Bennett College in Greensboro, NC; dean of students at North Carolina Wesleyan College in Rocky Mount, NC; and director of residential life at Spelman College in Atlanta, GA.  For the last two years, she has served as an educational consultant while completing her doctoral studies at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

Mobley holds a master’s degree in counseling and guidance from UNC Greensboro and a bachelor’s degree in education from UNC Chapel Hill.  She also completed the Institute for Educational Management at Harvard University and participated in the Oxford Roundtable in Oxford, England.

About GSSM
GSSM is a two-year, public, residential high school in Hartsville, S.C., specializing in the advanced study of science and mathematics. Over its 20-year history, GSSM has graduated more than 1,200 alumni from every county in South Carolina. Many are now leaders in such critical fields as engineering, medicine, education, law, science, technology, research and business. Its residential program serves 128 high school juniors and seniors a year with a concentrated study of science and math, alongside rigorous courses in the humanities, to prepare graduates to excel as leaders in the state’s 21st-century economy. Newsweek and The Washington Post have ranked GSSM among the Top 20 “public elite” high schools in the country.   In March, GSSM announced the launch of its new Economics and Finance Institute, an exciting new initiative that will infuse the study of economics into current course offerings.  Construction was recently completed on two new wings that will allow GSSM to more than double the size of its student body, expanding this unique learning program to even more of the state’s promising young minds.
