Engenuity SC seeks mentors for students in the Carolina Alliance for Technology

July 27, 2017

EngenuitySC is excited to expand the cadre of professionals serving as mentors to students in the Richland County School District 2 Carolina Alliance for Technology (CAT). CAT mentors meet with students at Ridge View or Westwood High School who are interested in computer science and engineering careers, sharing real-world experience, encouraging goal-setting, and casually coaching new skills.

Mentors in the program – now entering its fourth year – dedicate five hours each year to meeting with mentees on organized “Mentor Days” at each school. Often, a mentor meets with a small group of students (no more than three) to encourage discussion. And, while students in the program are focused on computer science and engineering careers, many of their questions can be answered by professionals and college students in a range of fields.

“I love that the mentor program gave me a chance to create more contacts and get a personal view of what the outside world is like,” reports a former student participant. “The mentors are caring. They ask us questions and they give us feedback and choices.”

Says Cameron Hochrein, Service/QA manager at Swagelock South Carolina and CAT mentor, “I truly enjoy getting to spend some time doing meaningful work with students in Richland School District Two. I look back on my time in high school and think how valuable it would have been to have a mentor then!”
